BARBARIAN AND THE GEISHA (CD)
Composed by: Hugo Friedhofer

NEAR MINT - UNSEALED - ONLY ONE AVAILABLE

Complete stereo release of colorful, exciting 1958 score.

A colorful and atmospheric costume drama based on a story by Ellis St. Joseph, The Barbarian and the Geisha is a fictionalized (and Hollywood-ized) account of the historic 1856 visit to Japan by American Consul General, Townsend Harris (played by John Wayne). Harris was the first foreign diplomat to enter the “Forbidden Empire,” as Japan was then known to the rest of the world. At a dinner held in his honor, Harris meets a geisha girl named Okichi (played by Manchurian actress, Eiko Ando) who comes to live in his house and falls in love with him. The film is a romantic tale of their unrequited love (because of clashing cultural traditions), played out against Harris’ harrowing efforts to establish diplomatic relations between America and Japan. Produced by 20th Century-Fox in 1958, the film was directed by John Huston and shot in Cinemascope on location in Japan.
